At the end of 30 days, I couldn't take it anymore. I had to go back to working from home full-time. I love it too much. In fact, those 30 days really forced me to think about why I love working from home. Here are five reasons:

I love that I can wake up at 5 a.m. and start working immediately. I also love that I can sleep in until my body is rested, take the morning off, and start my work-day after lunch. Oh, and I love that I don't have to use "vacation time" for car repairs, dental appointments, and other routine things I have to get done.

I love that I can work in my study, or upstairs at the kitchen table, or at the Panera Bread restaurant down the street. I never realized how stifling it can be to work in the same place all day, every day for the entire year until I began working from home. I also didn't realize how switching up where you work can spark creativity and help you overcome "work resistance."
3. Freedom to Eat 3 Meals a Day with My Family
This is extremely important to me. I'm married with a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son. I love to spend time with them. Since I've been working at home, I get to eat three meals a day with them on most days. I love this. It was the first thing I missed when I tried out that job for 30 days. And the first thing I was so glad to have back.

5. Freedom to Shovel the Driveway the Morning it Snows
Okay, this one might seem wacky to you, so let me explain. I live in Denver, Colorado. We get a decent amount of snow during the winter. When I had a job, I never had time to shovel the driveway on mornings that it snowed. I remember backing out of the driveway over the fresh snow, thinking, "Man, these tire tracks are going to turn to ice and I'm going to have to chip it off the driveway tonight. Oh, well. Gotta get to work."
Then I'd sit in traffic for much longer than a sane person should, trying to get to work.
Now, every time it snows I'm reminded how blessed I am to work from home. I get to go out and shovel the driveway before I leave the house. The kids come out and play while I shovel. And I watch my neighbors drive (slide?) to work. It's a great feeling.
If you already work from home, I encourage you to count your blessings. Constantly remind yourself of why you love being self-employed. And if you've not yet broken free, write down your reasons and meditate on them. These will provide you with the motivation to do what it takes to be your own boss.
