Finding a job or enhancing your current position requires good self-marketing skills. What is self-marketing? Basically, self-marketing is communicating your benefits to potential or current employers. Think of yourself as a “product” and explain to employers what differentiates you from other “products.”Why is self-marketing important? Landing a job or improving your current position requires effectively selling your skills, abilities, and knowledge to employers. How do you market yourself? Self-marketing can be accomplished through networking, resumes, interviews, and salary negotiation.Reports estimate that as many as 85% of jobs aren’t advertised. Networking is one way to get at the “hidden job market” – those unadvertised jobs. Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job. They just may know of someone who is hiring. Develop a contact list including: family, friends, friends of friends, acquaintances, co-workers, former co-workers, neighbors, doctors, dentists, and lawyers. If you live in a large city, chances are you can find a job search support/networking group to attend. Remember, more contacts equals more job opportunities.Resumes are often your first contact with an employer. Your resume should highlight your skills for the job you want, not the jobs you’ve held. If you pr If you don't mind I'd like to start this piece with a narrative of the closing stages of an interesting movie I once watched titled TROY. If you do mind, then skip to the next section, as I believe I've put in enough from there to still convey most of my intended message :-). It was intriguing to watch a scene in the movie, where the Greek warriors, led by their famous fighting machine character "Achilles", exploited the somewhat fatalistic and excessively religious mentality of the Trojans. They did this by placing a gigantic wooden gift horse surrounded by corpses of Greek soldiers who looked like they had been afflicted by a strange illness on an open field where it would be easily found by the Trojans. When the Trojan King and his priests saw it, they readily interpreted it(as the Greeks had hoped they would) to mean their gods were at last fighting for them by visiting the strange illness on the Greeks. They believed that was why the Greeks had sent in the gift horse as an offering to appease the gods of the Trojans. Ignoring the protests of a few - including their king's son, who proposed that the gift be burned(Achilles and his guys who were hiding inside the giant horse-gift must have been terrified to hear that!) - the Trojans had the gift horse dragged through their hitherto impregnable city gates(which had kept attackers like the Greeks out for years), right into the city center. The people then danced late into the night celebrating the "apparent" surrender" of the Trojans. Hmm, how ironic. What they did not know was that the Trojans knew them so well, that they had expected this kind of reaction, and had played on it deliberately, to get behind the famed walls. Late in the night, long after the celebrations had ended and all the people had gone back to their homes to sleep, the Greek soldiers hidden in the giant wooden horse gift began to emerge. Within minutes, they began taking out the guards, and killing any other Trojans they met along the way. In no time, they had opened the city gates, and let their waiting compatriots in. They believed that was why the Greeks had sent in the gift horse as an offering to appease the gods of the Trojans.I am sure most would agree that a dream job would be one where you schedule your own hours, work out of your home and get paid well doing it. There has always been a small percentage of the work force population who have had this type of position ever since the dawning of the internet. Today, however, is a whole new ballgame. Job positions in a wider variety of career fields are now in the form of telecommuting jobs that do not require or require minimal visits at the job location. Nearly one hundred percent of the work can be done in the comfort of your home and communication done simply by phone and email. Though these positions may seem too good to be true, they actually exist for most careers and many small and large companies are incorporating telecommuting as a part of their working environment. Not only this, but many websites have emerged to cater specifically to telecommuting jobs by bringing together the freelance telecommuter and companies and individuals who want to contract them. These are also known as work exchanges. Elance.com, a work exchange set up in 2002, has developed into one of the more reputable work exchanges on the internet. They allow companies or individuals looking for help to post projects or job postings on their website. Then, have freelance contractors place bids on them. At the point when they contempla Leading Change - Empowering People for a Change ed that was why the Greeks had sent in the gift horse as an offering to appease the gods of the Trojans.During times of change in an organization people tend to freeze and not want to take responsibility. As a change leader you need people who are empowered, yet many a leader just sits back and blames the people and become a dictator extraordinaire. As a Marine sniper in Vietnam I saw leaders empower us young kids who knew nothing. One leader, Colonel Masterpool, had people that would follow him to hell and back just because of who he was and how he treated and communicated with us.When I worked for Frito Lay back in the late seventies and into and through the eighties, they came along and decided they’d ‘empower’ our mechanics that worked in the shops of our extensive private truck fleet. They wanted to elevate them, they said, to positions of more responsibility. It was a big change in our modus operandi.Headquarters Human Resources were in charge of this charade and it became a program that was rolled out across the country. When it hit the streets it amounted to nothing more than a headcount reduction, we eliminated the vast majority of our Fleet Managers as they were called, the folks who ran the shops that maintained the vehicles of our private fleet. It was called empowerment. When it hit the street it reminded me of the old quote from Alfred E. As such, candidates should be prepared to face the psychometric test just as they would be prepared for an interview. But, what can you do to ensure you give your optimum performance on the day?It is possible to revive seemingly lost skills by exercising particular parts of the brain. For example, prior to a psychometric test involving verbal reasoning, time spent playing word games and doing crosswords puzzles will certainly pay dividends. Another valuable activity that will strengthen your analysis and communication skills is reading in-depth articles in business journals and summarising their key points. What at first may seem like a hard slog will soon begin to come naturally. As for numerical reasoning, practise basic mental arithmetic including addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, percentages and ratios. In addition, familiarise yourself with the different ways of presenting data visually – graphs, pie charts, histograms, etc. Psychometric tests are geared towards assessing your ability to handle information rather than perform straightforward calculations, so practise extracting specific facts from data presented in various forms. Did you know that 70% of all complaints received by the SEC have no basis at all. It’s true. Same thing at most regulatory bodies; Business Opportunities and franchises are no different most of the complaints are false. But has the Federal Trade Commission ever done such a study to see how many are fake complaints to try to get free stuff? No, they have never studied this.If there are fewer than 1/10 of one percent complaints in franchising; why is the FTC proposing rule making changes and increasing regulations? They should reduce the disclosure, reduce the rules and let free enterprise solve the real problems that plague mankind, not add to the current bureaucracy. It is just not needed. Sure the Biz Op scams are out there and should be continually looked at.The Federal Trade Commission has so many other things to worry about without putting the final death nail in the franchising model, as middle class families of this country are struggling to make ends meet. A few of these families wish to include as part of their strategic plan to pursue happiness in business of their own. This is their definition of the American Dream and what better industry to provide that to them than the franchising model? What say you?Why is the Federal Trade Commission proposing more So, what really happened to cause this tragedy? The Trojans acted naively. At the point when they contemplated what to do with the gift horse, even the most competent among them lost hold of his critical thinking skills, and succumbed instead to wishful thinking encouraged by overzealous priests. The Greeks had done the opposite. They had studied their enemies well. They knew their strengths(from many unsuccessful attempts at trying to force their way into the city), and took pains to discover their weaknesses. They then put together a plan to exploit the latter, in order to achieve their aims. In my opinion, the foregoing is an excellent example of the application, by the Greeks, of the principles described in a book titled "The Art of War" (regarded as a classic work on strategy in warfare) written by Sun Tzu, an ancient Chinese General reputed to have been extremely successful in war. Consider the quote below, from that book: “Therefore, when capable, feign incapacity: when active, inactivity. When near, make it appear you are far away when far away, that you are near….I make my enemy see my strengths as weaknesses and my weaknesses as strengths while I cause his strengths to become weaknesses and discover where he is not strong…I conceal my tracks so that none can discern them; I keep silence so that none can hear me” – Sun Tzu, in “The Art Of War” Incidentally Mark R. McNeilly in his book “Sun Tzu and the Art Of Business – Six strategic principles for managers” translated the strategic concepts from the original book by Sun Tzu – into successful business strategies. In his book, McNeilly describes the principle of Deception and Foreknowledge (along with five others) as crucially important for achieving success in business. Among other things, he explained that if you wish to get ahead of your business competition, you must do a very deep level of research and analysis. Something like that done by the Greeks in the movie I just described. I would add that this means you have to study them well enough to understand HOW THEY THINK, and WHAT makes them do the things they do, the way they do them. By so
