While I too have some doubts about his ability to actually prophesize I wonder if you think he had access to esoteric knowledge that contravened his religious piety? Certainly his predictions about finding Atlantean outcroppings off the coast of Belize and Bimini seem accurate as well as his earlier beliefs in the earths axis (from magnetic forces)tilting, causing widespread tidal and weather related destruction in a cyclical fashion.
