The Five Year Plan Works in Franchising
Many franchise agreements these days have five year franchise terms, which go through to an automatic renewal period and then they go for another five years. In the past many franchise agreements were 10 to 15 to 20 years. Today b

Just recently I joined forces with a marketing consultant in Massachusetts to help me open up a new market. I believe in learning from those who know more than I do!

Now marketing consultants don’t come cheap. But instead of paying him a hefty fee up front for his advice and not knowing exactly what I’ll get and whether it’ll be worth the money or not, this is set up as a joint venture. That means I profit from his expertise and grow my business in an area that I’m unfamiliar with, and in return we share the rewards.

That’s what joint venturing is about: partnering up with people with different strengths and assets to produce great results.

In this model I’m partnering with someone who is helping me grow my business and will share in the profits. But he’s also sharing the risks.

I really like this model. He is motivated to do a good job because he only gets paid if I get results. Because of that I know he’ll hold my feet to the fire and I’ll achieve more than I ever thought possible. The temptation to goof off or to

s motivated to do a good job because he only gets paid if I get results. Because of that I know he’ll hold my feet to the fire and I’ll achieve more than I ever thought possible. The temptation to goof off or to give up when obstacles come along will be much less and it’s a win-win situation for both of us.

There are many ways to set up these kinds of partnerships.

You can find someone who has something you don’t have e.g. time, money, expertise, an extensive mailing list, products. Or someone who has a inroad into your target market but is not in competition with you. See how you can cooperate to create a win- win situation. It’s a very simple but extremely powerful concept: you give up part of your profit to someone else in order for them to help you get customers.

Anyway I’m once again seeing the wisdom of joining forces with someone else for the benefit of both – and it feels really good to cooperate in this way. I’ll be keeping my eye out for more joint ventures in the future.
