Comparing PhotoReading to Speed Reading: History

Speed Reading is an older method popularized during the1940s. The term “photo-reading” was coined in 1994, and was designed after speed reading together with the terms “mega-speed-reading” (1997) and alpha-netics (1999). Although the idea isn’t exactly new, it is currently being marketed as a breakthrough system that uses the subconscious mind to process information.

Comparing PhotoReading to Speed Reading: Concepts

The concept of speed reading is based on the belief that humans can identify visual information at a rate of 1/500 of a second with full recognition, as seen in an experiment conducted by the US Air Force. Speed Reading uses psychological techniques such as chunking information and eliminating subvocalization, thereby increasing the rate of reading speed.

PhotoReading also works on the visual absorption theory, but takes it a little further by taking mental pictures of every page. The reader does not read or scan the lines, but looks at the page as a whole. This process is actually the third step in a five-step process taught in the “PhotoReading Whole Mind System.” This system is largely criticized for its lack of evidence and is considered a pseudoscience.

Horizontal Growth Versus Web 2.0: SEO - Search Engine Optimization
My whole argument, which I have put forth below, is based on the popular quote of Jack Welch, the former General Electric CEO, saying “An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage.”The above quote, for me, is a thought-provoking dose that has doped my guts to assess an organization’s ability to learn and trans

Comparing PhotoReading to Speed Reading: Processes and methodologies

In speed reading, the eyes are trained to move quickly across the page using pacing techniques. It makes use of a reading machine called the tachistocope, which is believed to increase reading from 200 to 400 words per minute. However, post-course timings show that the reading speed dramatically decreases when the machine is not used.

In PhotoReading, the reader has to go through five steps:

    1. Inducing a light hypnotic (semi-unconscious) state to make the mind more receptive to information
    2. Previewing the book by going through the index and appendix and getting a feel of its structure and contents
    3. “PhotoReading” by taking mental pictures of every page in the book, at a rate of one page per second
    4. Letting the subconscious absorb and activate the information for 20 minutes to a day, and skimming the pages to fill in gaps from previewing and PhotoReading steps
    5. Reading rapidly (speed reading) and absorbing the full contents of the book.

Comparing PhotoReading to Speed Reading: Conscious versus the unconscious

Proponents of PhotoReading claim that speed reading is simply regular reading done faster, thereby still using the conscious mind to absorb information. The main drawback of speed reading is its low rate of comprehension (about 50%), which means the reader und
