Success-bound people tend to hang out with fellow travelers and those who have already achieved a modicum of success or much more. To do anything less is to lock into marginal results and mountains of unhappiness and regret as we age.

No matter where you may live and no matter what the conditions may be in your life, it is a sad reality that many… no, most! - people choose to hold onto the “safe” life, no matter how unfulfilled that life may be. They listen and respect the swarm of nay Sayers buzzing about who have achieved little and aspired little. When looking for ideas and encouragement, they find slim pickings of either in this safe-thinking group.

We have all tried things which were uncomfortable to do at first. When the first baby steps are taken, we feel a tinge of embarrassment or even a degree of humiliation with the initial feeble result.

So what do most people do at that juncture? They retreat ever deeper into the Well of Doubt. Some even hide their head in the sand…forever. They tell their friends that they tried this or that and it was too difficult or too dangerous or too financially risky. Their turkey friends offer them a crying towel and a bundle of consoling hugs.

Welcome to the Den of Spiritual Inertia.

These so-called friends pop open the brew, fill the bowl with pretzels and flip on the remote control to the newest hit program from the television wasteland. All is well, as long as one doesn’t bother to think and open his eyes to the screaming, omnipresent sea of opportunity.

We deserve a different fate than a small ant which is stomped upon by a conquering army.

We don’t have to be in the way of the marching boot. Our lives are not predetermined. Our actions need not be robotic or routine. Our minds need not always hold to the linear patterns pounded into our psyche since infancy.

Our very existence is proof of our uniqueness. That uniqueness cannot be stripped from us without our consent. Our brain is not our master, but our slave. God only knows how many times my hair-trigger temper has led me down the path of regret because I didn’t claim my brain.
