Straight on with the story this time and in verse 31 Daniel begins the interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar's dream. We must remember too that the king cannot even remember what the dream was, let alone know what it was all about. The God given miraculous interpretation commences and Daniel explains to the king that in his dream he saw a great image (don't forget, it's all about idolatrous images) verse 31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. So here we have a very frightening spectacle in this image that is both dazzlingly bright and fierce to the point of being fearsome in its appearance. Now I will return to these two verses later, but what we need to understand here at this point in the narrative is that this image and what it symbolises goes through our time and into the future to the awesome event of the return of The Lord Jesus Christ. Daniel chapter 2 is literally a condensed history encapsulating Babylon BC right through to events in the future yet to be fulfilled. In verses 37-38 Daniel tells the king that it is the Godhead who has given him to be king and to be a powerful king over all things in his empire. King Nebuchadnezzar and his empire is represented by the head of gold on this image. In verse 39 Daniel tells him that his empire will not last and will be replaced by lesser kingdoms: 39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. This second kingdom or empire is represented by the breast and arms of silver. Then we have a third empire which shall bear rule over all the earth which is represented by the belly and thighs of brass. Finally, in verse 40, we have a fourth empire which is more ruthless, blood thirsty and violent than any of those that have gone before: 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.

I will end the narration here for the time being and run through the history that is represented by the different metals of this image. First we have King Nebuchadnezzar and his Babylonian Empire and we must not forget that this image is a Babylonian image representing a religious/political system. We then move on in history to the time when the Persians invade Babylon and destroy it. The Persians invade Babylon in 537 BC only 70 years after Judah had gone into captivity into Babylon. The king of Persia then allows the captive Jews to return home.

Persia is next to fall and they are invaded and conquered by the Greeks under Alexander in 330 BC. Greece is represented by the belly and thighs of brass. The image is now divided with the representation of the thighs and this is because Greece is the first western empire. Alexander, although from the west, ventured further east than any empire builder before him. Even the Romans could not match him in his eastern exploits. East and west therefore are represented by the thighs or legs of this Babylonian image. Alexander's empire though is short lived due to his premature death, he dies in 323 BC and his kingdom is divided into four. Not surprisingly this weakens it and it is finally invaded and conquered by the Romans in 172 BC. Please note, most, if not all, of the religions and systems of the previous empires are absorbed or adopted by the Romans into their beliefs and systems - Babylon continues.
