Here are just a few that you could count on in this situation… “He doesn’t respect me,” “I’m being humiliated in front of all these people,” “It’s going to be hard to find another job,” “I won’t be able to pay the bills.”

    Those are all fairly stressful thoughts, wouldn’t you agree? Now, go to that same situation and take all the stressful thoughts out of it. What are you left with? “Man telling me in raised voice that he doesn’t want me to come back here.” That’s it. What is stressful about that situation without the story that follows in your own mind? I can’t find anything. It is even a potentially positive experience. For instance, you have an opportunity, now that you’ve been fired, to find a job that’s even better than your last one. You have time off to do what you want. You don’t have to get up early to go to work. You can spend more time with friends and family.

    However, when the stressful thoughts erupt in your mind in a situation like this, it is practically impossible to see the good in it. Your mind is a machine of habit.
