    There we stood, faced off in front of each other, the newly fallen snow lying thick on the ground. This wasn’t just any snow, it was heavy and thick and wet: the perfect kind for those winter weapons… snowballs. In our group, we had an assembly line: A couple of guys to make the snowballs, a couple of guys to replenish the snow for the makers, a couple of guys to stock up the newly made weapons for the throwers, and the rest of the group to throw them.

    So there we made our stand, the air peppered with white missiles flying in perfect arcs to splat harmlessly in front of our firing line. We remained where we were to make sure that we had a fix on the other teams range, and then we adjusted our distance and started throwing our own snowballs, picking off the front lines and the odd bystander. As we’d move closer, the other team would back up accordingly. They’d taunt and jeer us as they kept throwing their poorly targeted snowballs. They knew we had a few great arms in our group, and they made sure that they were always just a little out of range or our onslaughts. The further that they were out of range, the braver they were, until finally we’d make a rush at them and they would scatter like falling leaves in a stiff autumn wind.

    From experience, I have found that at times, I, and probably many other people, deal with stress in much the same way: We try to stay far enough out of range of the situation and it’s implications to ensure that we don’t get touched by it, and when it lands close to home, we scatter in all directions hoping to miss the attack, which only seems to make it worse. Running and hiding is no way to deal with the stress that we are feeling in our lives. When we aren’t faced with the direct impact of the situation, isn’t it amazing how brave we actually are?

    I find that as much as I know what to do, and just how important it is to be able to look at what is really going on, I sometimes resist looking at the current reality of the situation. The problem with this scenario is simply this: like an ostrich with his head in the sand, if we don’t know what is really going on, how can we even attempt to fix it?
