Last week marked my son’s and my annual pilgrimage to the Big Apple Circus. Now, I’m really not sure why he needs to see the real thing when everyday at home he’s got ringside seats to watch Mommy star as juggler, tightrope walker, roadie, ringmaster and yes, even chief clown. But, it’s become a family tradition. This is somewhat surprising, as our first venture to the big top was anything but enjoyable.

Four years ago, I had been working around the clock on the final manuscript for my first book. However, I promised my son to make it up to him one Friday with tickets to the circus. At 5:45 p.m. that evening, as I’m bolting out the door to get him from daycare (late, of course), I glance at the tickets I’ve had for three weeks now and suddenly realize that they were for a show earlier in the day.
