However, surviving long-term in the selling business requires some powerful techniques and strategies. Developing 'street smarts' is just one of them.

    By my definition 'street smarts' encompasses three distinct things working in unison. These are, being in a constant state of conscious awareness, questioning the information obtained and learning from mistakes. This seems straight forward enough but it is implemented as a strategy by very few individuals.

    'Being in a constant state of conscious awareness' simply means to focus on the present and observe what is going on all around you while you are interacting with a prospect. This will alert you to potential difficulties that might be creeping in on you. Just imagine how alert you would want to be if you were walking down a dark street in a tough neighborhood. Bring this sense of awareness to your sales presentations.

    'Question the information you obtain through this awareness'. This simply means think about what it is that you are seeing and hearing. Question its validity. Don't simply accept everything at face value. Don't just react or overreact. Rather, 'think, then act with purpose'. Not everything on that dark street is to be feared. Neither is everything always safe.
