Easy Steps to Improve Your Business - NOW!
One of the catalysts I use for topic ideas is Chase’s Calendar of Events (if you’re looking to find a publicity “hook” for your business, or for a volunteer organization for which you are trying to raise money, I can’t think of a better tool! www.chases.com) According to Chase’s, May is Business Improvement Month. While you may not be a registered as a business owner, you are indeed involved in the most important business in the world – the “business of life.” The world judges business by “the bottom line” – and although we may not do it consciously, we should judge the business of our lives by whethe

Is Marketing About Understanding The Reason For Your Business?
So many marketing consultants say that marketing is about understanding the reason you are in business, do you believe that is true? They report that to be true and they even write books about the subject, gives seminars, go on radio talk shows and even sell business cassette tapes for business executives and small businessmen to listen to stating that; Marketing is about understanding the reason you are in business. But is it true?Is marketing really about understanding the reason your business? About a decade ago ServiceMaster was asked by a marketing consultant why they were in business? One of the executives said that they were in business to pr
I’ve never been much of a fisherman. Sitting in a small boat for hours watching a red and white bobber float atop the water holds about as much interest for me as watching paint dry. My old man, on the other hand, would have rather fished than breathe. In fact, his favorite Bible quote was: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and he’ll sit in the boat and drink beer with you for life.” Needless to say, my old man wasn’t much of a Bible scholar, but he was one heck of a fisherman.

The few times that I went fishing with him as a young boy (before I was old enough to know better) he’d bait my hook with a worm he’d dug up from our garden and drop it in the water and tell me to watch the bobber until a fish pulled it under the surface. The moment I saw the bobber go under I was to jerk the line and reel the fish in. I can remember staring at that bobber until my eyes crossed and never, not once, did it ever go under the surface. I am probably the only male child ever born in the great state of Alabama who never caught a single fish. It is but one of the disappoint

How to Create a Niche Market for Your Business
Have you ever wondered how so many beauty salons, web design companies, attorneys or Mexican restaurants can exist in the same geographic area? Especially in small populated areas? Maybe the demand is high. Or, perhaps some of these businesses have set themselves apart by targeting a niche market.A niche is a special area of demand for a product or service. Not all beauty salons, for example, are created equal in price, customer service, convenient location and hours, scheduling, stylist expertise and so on. The same is literally true for all businesses; web design, marketing consultants, hardware stores, attorneys. The list goes on.Creating a n

The Death of Product Packaging as We Know It.
It used to be you that if you had a great product you put it in a package and voila! . . .someone would come along and buy it. That is not the case any more. The package not only has to protect the product and allow for its tracking, it has to sell it too. Most importantly, the package has to capture someone's attention in less than three seconds.Consider the last time you went shopping. Were there any new products that jumped at you off the shelves? With smart packaging there is an embedded chip that says "buy me" every time someone walks past your product. Seriously, that will happen in the future, but right now smart packaging is confined to a few

You Outsource Operations - Not Responsibility
One of the great challenges facing senior executives today is whether or not to outsource the delivery of some of their services. The financial services sector was an early adopter of outsourcing in the US and UK and many institutions have outsourced their IT functions for several years. In other sectors, such as telecoms, outsourcing is in its infancy. In these sectors key questions are being asked about what functions should be outsourced; various criteria are used to inform these decisions – are these functions core? Are they critical? Whole industry norms are being challenged in the telecommunications industry with big players such as 3 outsourcing t

My old man’s bobber, on the other hand, would be jerked under the water within minutes of being tossed in. He’d be catching fish left and right and I’d be sitting there like some angler savant just staring at my bobber and wishing I was old enough to cuss out loud.

I discovered a few years later that the reason he caught all the fish was that he baited his hook with live worms while hanging the dead ones on mine. His worm would wiggle seductively to attract every fish within a two mile radius while mine couldn’t even get the attention of a starving turtle if it had swam directly into my hook.

I’m sure I suffered some permanent psychological damage as a result of his actions, but we all have our scars to bear. Mine just happens to be in the shape of a hook with a dead worm hanging from it. The memory ha
