Anybody who has used Internet for a while must have heard of or used Ask Jeeves. In the early days of the web, Ask Jeeves tried to differentiate itself by letting people ask questions on its search engine rather than just searching for keywords. However, it was cluttered with ads that confused people with the actual search results and made the results hard to find. So unlike Yahoo and Google, it never really took off in terms of success.

Ask Jeeves has been totally redesigned and renamed Ask.com. Although Ask.com is starting from a low ranking, it is improving very fast and has the potential of going above its ranking. In the redesigned layout, ads have been cut down to a few number at top and at bottom of each page and they have a different colored background than the actual search results. Google displays ads on the right hand side of the page while Ask uses that space to refine user’s search results. Overall, Ask’s search pages are better organized than Google results and they give greater priority to content than ads.

I took a comparison of Ask with Google by searching for “Bill Gates” in each search engine. Google gave its usual page with Bill Gates’ homepage link at the top and some ads on the right side. In Ask, I got Bill Gates’ photo, link to his homepage and on the right hand side of the page, there were many related links to Bill Gates that could potentially narrow down my search.

At the end of the day, Ask has a long way to go before it can start competing seriously with Google. But as far as you and I are concerned, Ask does strive to provide unique services and it is in our best interest to make use of it.
