Award Winning Advertising and What You Can Learn From a Talking Gecko
Each year the advertising industry magazine called Advertising Age nominates the very best advertising and marketing campaigns in corporate America. Of course the consumers are not stupid and many times they can guess who is going to win. There's a lot to be said for award-winning advertising in corporate America and it is amazing what you can learn from a ta
Recently in an interview, Aaron Potts asked me about success. Immediately I thought of success as looking forward to Mondays. We are a society of "weekenders." One of the most popular catch phrases in the U.S. is "Thank God its Friday." I refer to this as the Friday-Generation syndrome. We live for the weekends and I have to wonder why? I love my Mondays. They exhilarate me! I think it really boils down to what we do for a living and how much we enjoy what we do. I remember Deepak Chopra once saying that most heart attacks occur at 9 am on Monday mornings. I don't think this is because we are a culture of masochists who just enjoy suffering. It is because we have not found our passion. No man who lives his life with a passion hates Mondays. You can quote me on that. So now the important part-how does one find their passion? Their place in the world? A couple of ways...

    1) Look to your childhood. Children are innocent and their desires are often untainted by society's standards of what is correct. What is it that you enjoyed most as a child? For me, it was teaching. I took all my dolls and set up school. I didn't teach math and science though. I talked to them about life. I shared with them my theory on how when it rained I believed God was saying he loved me. I put my dolls into groups. I encouraged them to communicate openly with their fellow brethren. I was a born coach! My cousin loved bandaging up these same dolls. Her red marker would wreak havoc on Barbie, and then a mixture of bandages and dirt would cure her. Today my cousin is a nurse, and she loves her Mondays. Often it takes some time to dig up our childhood memories. We forget how much we loved art or fixing things, and the time looking back is well spent if it helps us find our passion.

    2) Ignore Society. Back in the 1950's it was considered a disaster if a woman chose her career over family. Today women who choose to settle down versus bring home an income are criticized. You can't please everyone. Standards change all the time. Follow your passion, and let it take you where it will. My friend Anita chose to settle down and raise a family. She has no inclination to be anything but a stay at home mom. She loves her Mondays.
