During San Da (free fighting) whenever your opponent is outside your striking range you have the option to make or not make deliberate contact with your opponent's strikes and to do so would form what is called a Kiu (Bridge) and hence the expression Kiu Sau (Bridge Hand).

Imagine that you come home one evening with TONS of work to do on your computer and need to do quickly. As you pull into your driveway, you notice that the local phone company is putting in underground cables in the front yard of both of your neighbors. No big deal since they're not digging big holes in your lawn, right? In fact, you're relieved that they're not digging in your yard since that reduces the likelihood they'll do any damage to your house.

Martial Arts Book Review: Karate Kata Heian #2 and Heian#3 by Masatoshi Nakayama
Sometimes, depending on the school and the instructor, the Heian katas are also called the Pinan katas. The section on the katas starts out with a very well done diagram of the footwork as it is to be performed in the kata. These diagrams are very clear and precise in their presentation. You may be a bit confused by them at first, but they will clear up just as soon as you perform the kata a few times.

Martial Arts Book Review - The Way of Kata by Lawrence A. Kane
This book should be required reading for any, and I do mean any, and all individuals who practice a martial art that incorporates kata as a requirement for advancement. Although I knew a quite a bit of information that Lawrence had provided in this book, there was just as much if not more that I didn't know, or had a slightly different outlook on. Needless to say I was very impressed with the information contained in this book.
