Paul and Silas were escorted to the lowered dungeon, uncomfortable, in chains, mistreated, hurting and still probably bleeding from the beatings. One would expect them to be belligerent, angry, complaining but instead we find them singing and rejoicing. At midnight when it would seem they would have been trying to rest and soothe themselves, they prayed and sang praises to God.

Let us grasp from the outset that success as understood in the usual secular sense of the word is not promised in the kingdom of God. God never promised anybody a star-studded career. He never promised achievement in the worldly understanding of the word. In fact, He seem to promise the exact opposite.

You become what you see. Jesus brought to light immortality through the gospel. The outer church sees only mortality. The teaching of Jesus is about God's gift of immortality to every man-the true self made in the likeness of God, immortal.

Physical illnesses in my view result from an individual's reluctance to feel feelings such as sadness, hurt and disappointment that live inside them and that are trying to warn them that something is wrong. Without feeling these feelings and taking appropriate action any other approach to healing is only temporary and symptomatic.

When we think today in terms of ancient Greece, certainly the people and culture associated with Athens comes immediately to mind. Ephesians 5:17 it says Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 19:21 it says Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. What a man desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar. The fear of the Lord leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble.

And then we ask ourselves upon what principles are we allotted our looks. What is it that makes us ugly or attractive or “plain?” What is it that gives us a musical ear or an artistic eye; an affectionate disposition or an uncontrollable temper, a talent for mathematics or skills of language?

What is the meaning of life? While we are in the business of getting, we should gather the true currency of the soul. We are here for a purpose. And when our intention is pure, we ascend to success in this life and the next.
